“Imagine you are living in New York City in July, 1869. You are one of many people who believe John Roebling’s design for the Brooklyn Bridge will never work. You have just read in the newspaper that he died in an accident while surveying the location where the bridge is to be built. Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper demanding that the bridge construction is halted. Use persuasive arguments to support your position.”

27 Luglio 1896 - Dear Editor,
The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge should be stopped. First of all, the conditions in which the work is done are very bad. Many workers have died (and many others will) because of the many hazards that occur at the construction site.
Secondly, the bridge will never last because its design requires a long span and is unstable.
Furthermore, many people will be out of work because the surrounding buildings will be destroyed. Since many of these buildings host stores, the store owners will go out of business. Ferry workers will also lose their jobs because the boats will no longer have a location to dock to.
Finally, the bridge will increase traffic around that area. This is a big problem because the traffic will cause noise that will disturb people, and transportation in New York City will become a difficult issue.
Please publish this letter so that people will understand the problems surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge, and vote to stop construction.

Mia moglie ed io siamo veramente contrari all’idea di costruire un ponte fra Brooklyn e Manhattan.
Prima di tutto, siamo appena usciti da una guerra sanguinosa piena di morti e molti dei nostri lavoratori che lavorano in condizioni pietose e pericolosissime rischiano di unirsi a loro. Inoltre, tutti i nostri concittadini impegnati nelle compagnie di trasporto fluviale di passeggeri finirebbero senza lavoro. Il pacchetto delle meraviglie non finisce qui! Tutto il sud di Manhattan sarà affollato da turisti ed operai che vengono da Brooklyn e si creerà un traffico insostenibile.
C’è un’altra considerazione: il disegno e la struttura di questo ponte sono nuove e mai sperimentate prima, non sara’ pericoloso? Insomma non possiamo permetterci tutto questo da un’America appena uscita dalla guerra civile.
